Portugal in November

Portugal in November: 65°F in Lisbon, 60°F in Porto, 68°F in the Algarve, rainy season sets in · tourist season is over. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.

November is the pivot into low season — rain starts in earnest (Porto turns genuinely wet, Lisbon gets Atlantic fronts, the Algarve stays the sunniest but still sees showers), crowds vanish, and prices drop to their cheapest until spring. The ocean's 63°F and you won't want to swim; this is the month Portugal shifts from beaches to cities, wine country, and the Algarve's walking trails and golf courses. São Martinho on November 11 brings roasted chestnuts and the first taste of young wine. If you want Lisbon or Porto to yourself and don't mind an umbrella, November delivers.

Temperature

65°F in Lisbon, 60°F in Porto, 68°F in the Algarve — mild but jacket weather, especially evenings

Wind

Atlantic fronts bring wind and clouds; the nortada summer wind is gone, replaced by wetter westerlies

Rain

Rainy season sets in — Porto is one of Europe's wettest cities now, Lisbon gets frequent fronts, the Algarve stays sunniest but expect showers

Crowds & prices

Tourist season is over. Lisbon and Porto are quiet, the Algarve empties of beach crowds, and hotels hit their lowest pricing tier until spring. You'll walk into restaurants without reservations, have miradouros to yourself, and find flight and hotel deals — this is when locals reclaim their cities. The trade is rain and shorter days, but if you're here for culture, food, and wine rather than sun, November is one of the year's best value windows.

When to book

November is low season — you can book flights and hotels 4–6 weeks out and still find good availability and prices. The exception is the first week (All Saints' Day bridge weekend can see Portuguese domestic travel) and the week around São Martinho. If you want a specific boutique hotel or a Douro wine tour on a weekend, book 6–8 weeks ahead; otherwise November rewards spontaneity.

What to do

What November is made for.

On the calendar

  • All Saints' Day (November 1)
  • São Martinho (November 11) — roasted chestnuts and the first taste of young wine

Pack for November

  • Waterproof jacket or compact umbrella — rain is frequent, especially in Porto
  • Layers: fleece or light sweater for 60–65°F days and cooler evenings
  • Closed-toe walking shoes that can handle wet cobblestones
  • Scarf and long pants — beach clothes stay home this month
  • Small daypack to stash the rain layer when the sun breaks through

Know before you go

  • Porto gets 5–6 inches of rain in November — plan indoor days (port cellars, museums, covered markets) and don't fight the weather.
  • The Algarve is Portugal's sunniest corner even now; if you want November sun and don't care about swimming, Lagos and Tavira beat Lisbon.
  • São Martinho (November 11) is chestnut season — look for street vendors roasting castanhas and bars pouring água-pé (young, slightly fizzy wine).
  • Hotel and flight prices are rock-bottom; this is the month to splurge on a five-star Lisbon boutique or a Douro quinta for what you'd pay for mid-range in summer.
  • Book Douro wine tours on weekdays if possible — weekends still see some domestic tourism, and you'll get quieter quinta visits midweek.
  • Lisbon's miradouros are moody and beautiful in November light, especially when the clouds break — chase the golden hour around 5 p.m.
  • Don't expect beach days, but the Algarve's coastal walking trails (Rota Vicentina, Seven Hanging Valleys) are perfect in cool, clear weather after a morning shower.
