The coast is packed with Portuguese families on holiday plus British and Spanish tourists; book Benagil, Sintra and Douro tours 3–6 weeks out or you'll be shut out. The coastal nortada breeze makes Cascais and Ericeira noticeably cooler than the baking city. This is the month for beach life and late dinners under string lights — just know you're paying top euro and sharing it with everyone else.

Crowds & prices

The Algarve is wall-to-wall Portuguese families, British package tourists and Spanish day-trippers; Lisbon and Porto are thick with visitors; Sintra queues snake for hours. Hotels charge top rates everywhere, especially along the coast. Beach chairs and umbrellas rent out early; dinner reservations at any decent place need to be made days ahead. You're paying peak prices for peak energy — if you want space or a deal, this is not your month.
When to book

What to do
What July is made for.
On the calendar
- NOS Alive music festival in Lisbon
Pack for July

Know before you go
- Claim your beach chair and umbrella early — prime spots at popular Algarve beaches rent out by 10 AM
- Head to Cascais or Ericeira if Lisbon feels like an oven; the nortada wind drops the coast 5–10°F cooler
- Book Benagil, Sintra and Douro tours 3–6 weeks ahead or accept you're on a waitlist
- Make dinner reservations 2–3 days out for any restaurant that isn't tourist-trap mediocre
- The Algarve's western Costa Vicentina beaches (Carrapateira, Bordeira) have fewer crowds than the central coast, but stronger currents and cooler water
- Lisbon's miradouros are hottest midday; save them for late afternoon or early evening when the light is better anyway
- If you're day-tripping to Sintra, start at 9 AM opening or go late afternoon — midday is a sweaty scrum
