Portugal by month
Portugal in October
Portugal in October: 73°F in Lisbon, 68°F in Porto, 77°F in the Algarve, minimal in lisbon and the algarve · moderate to low crowds—summer tourists are gone, and you're ahead of the winter city-break wave. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.
October is the last truly warm month in Portugal—still swimmable in the Algarve (70°F water), still shirtsleeve-comfortable in Lisbon (73°F), and the tail end of the Douro grape harvest. Rain returns to Porto in the second half of the month, but crowds are gone and prices are mid-range. This is the sweet spot for people who want summer conditions without the July crush or the winter wet, though you'll need a jacket for evenings and should book northern itineraries early in the month.

Temperature
73°F in Lisbon, 68°F in Porto, 77°F in the Algarve—warm days, cool nights, light layers necessary after sunset
Wind
Nortada summer wind has eased; gentle Atlantic breeze on the coast, calm inland
Rain
Minimal in Lisbon and the Algarve; Porto sees rain return in the second half of the month as winter fronts start moving in
Crowds & prices
Moderate to low crowds—summer tourists are gone, and you're ahead of the winter city-break wave. Hotels sit in the shoulder $$ band: cheaper than peak summer but not rock-bottom like January. Beach clubs in the Algarve start closing by month's end, so the seaside feel shifts from full resort to quiet coast. Restaurants and wine tours in Lisbon, Porto and the Douro don't require the multi-week lead time of August, but popular Sintra slots and weekend Douro tours still fill up a week or two out.
When to book
Book flights 6–10 weeks out for the best shoulder-season fares. Hotels and tours can be locked in 2–4 weeks ahead without trouble, though if you're chasing specific Douro quintas for the tail end of vindima or weekend Sintra palace tickets, add a week to that window.
Our getting-there guide covers flights to Portugal plus a cheapest-fare-by-month table to sanity-check October flight prices.
What to do
What October is made for.
On the calendar
- Douro vindima (grape harvest and crush) wraps up in early October
Pack for October
- Light layers—T-shirts for the day, a sweater or jacket for evenings
- Sunscreen and sunglasses; the Algarve and Lisbon are still bright and warm
- Swimsuit if heading to the Algarve (70°F water is swimmable on warm days)
- Light rain jacket for Porto, especially late in the month
- Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones and palace gardens
- A hat for daytime sun exposure in the south
Know before you go
- Book Douro tours for early October if you want to see active harvest—by mid-month most quintas have finished crushing
- Many Algarve beach clubs and seasonal restaurants close by the end of October; confirm hours before heading to smaller resort towns
- Porto's rain kicks in mid-month—if you're splitting time between Porto and Lisbon, do Porto first while it's still dry
- Atlantic water is 66°F on the Lisbon coast, 70°F in the Algarve—only the south is truly comfortable for swimming
- Sunset sails and outdoor dining are still pleasant, but bring a layer; evenings drop into the high 50s
- Sintra palace tickets and guided tours still sell out on weekends—book 1–2 weeks ahead to lock in your slot
- This is the last month to surf in just boardshorts in the Algarve; by November you'll want a spring suit
