Portugal in April

Portugal in April: 67°F in Lisbon, 64°F in Porto, 69°F in the Algarve, mostly dry with occasional spring showers · moderate crowds and mid-range pricing, except easter week (semana santa) when lisbon, porto and especially braga fill up and hotel rates spike. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.

April is Portugal's breakout month — the rains ease, Lisbon hits a perfect 67°F, and the country shakes off winter without the summer crowds or prices. Easter week and Freedom Day (April 25) pack the cities, but book around them and you get cheap flights, available tables, and the year's best walking weather. The Algarve warms to 69°F — warm enough for beach blankets and afternoon swims if you're brave about 61°F water — while Porto and the Douro wake up green and sunny. This is the month seasoned travelers target.

Temperature

67°F in Lisbon, 64°F in Porto, 69°F in the Algarve — warm sun, cool mornings, perfect for all-day city walks

Wind

Light coastal breezes; the nortada hasn't kicked in yet, so beaches and Cascais are calm and pleasant

Rain

Mostly dry with occasional spring showers — carry a light jacket, but this is the month the skies clear for good

Crowds & prices

Moderate crowds and mid-range pricing, except Easter week (Semana Santa) when Lisbon, Porto and especially Braga fill up and hotel rates spike. April 25 (Freedom Day) is another peak — book those windows early or avoid them entirely. Outside those dates, you're in shoulder season: flights are cheap, restaurants have tables, and Sintra isn't a scrum. The Algarve is waking up but not mobbed; beach chairs and sunbeds are easy to claim, and many coastal hotels are still offering spring deals.

When to book

Book flights 6–10 weeks out for the best fares; April is popular with Europeans chasing spring sun, so prices climb as Easter approaches. Reserve Lisbon and Porto hotels 3–4 weeks ahead, earlier for Easter week. Sintra palace tickets and Douro wine tours sell out 2–4 weeks in advance — don't leave those to the last minute.

What to do

What April is made for.

On the calendar

  • Easter / Semana Santa (Braga processions, Lisbon church services)
  • April 25 Freedom Day (Lisbon celebrations, red carnations, live music)

Pack for April

  • Light layers — mornings are 53°F, afternoons 67°F
  • Sunscreen and a hat for Algarve beach days
  • Comfortable walking shoes for long city days
  • Light rain jacket for occasional spring showers
  • Swimsuit for brave Algarve swims (water is 61°F)
  • Sunglasses — the sun is strong by mid-afternoon

Know before you go

  • Avoid Easter week and April 25 if you want deals — those windows spike hotel prices and pack Lisbon and Braga.
  • Book Sintra palace tickets 2–4 weeks out; April is popular and Pena sells out on weekends.
  • Target the Algarve's western beaches (Lagos, Sagres) for fewer crowds than Albufeira — and the water's the same cold everywhere.
  • Douro wine tours are perfect this month — book small-group departures from Porto 3–4 weeks ahead for the best availability.
  • Restaurant reservations in Lisbon and Porto are easy outside Easter week — walk-ins work at most spots.
  • Flights from the UK and northern Europe are cheap mid-April if you dodge Easter — search 6–10 weeks out.
  • The Algarve is warm enough for beach blankets and reading, even if you skip the swim — claim a spot at Praia da Marinha or Benagil mid-afternoon when the sun warms the sand.
