Portugal by month
Portugal in February
Portugal in February: 60°F in Lisbon, 58°F in Porto, 62°F in the Algarve, still the wet season · low crowds everywhere except carnival weekend (mid/late february) in torres vedras, ovar and loulé, and a small valentine's bump in lisbon. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.
February is Portugal's best-value secret: Lisbon and Porto deliver full city-break experiences at low-season prices, almond trees bloom across the Algarve, and Carnival parades light up mid-month. Expect rain showers, cool evenings, and almost no crowds — hotels are half summer rates, reservations are easy, and you'll have the tile-lined streets largely to yourself. It's too cold for beach days, but perfect for museums, wine cellars, and long lunches without the queue.

Temperature
60°F in Lisbon, 58°F in Porto, 62°F in the Algarve — mild days, cool evenings that need a jacket
Wind
Atlantic fronts bring breezy conditions; coastal walks can be brisk, but the summer nortada hasn't arrived yet
Rain
Still the wet season — expect scattered showers in Lisbon, heavier and more frequent rain in Porto (5–6 inches for the month), drier spells in the Algarve
Crowds & prices
Low crowds everywhere except Carnival weekend (mid/late February) in Torres Vedras, Ovar and Loulé, and a small Valentine's bump in Lisbon. Hotels and flights are in their cheapest window — Lisbon four-stars run €60–90, Algarve beach resorts offer golf packages at half summer rates. Restaurants take walk-ins, tram 28 is manageable, and you'll actually get photos at Pena Palace without a hundred shoulders in frame. Book ahead only if you're chasing Carnival.
When to book
Four to six weeks out is plenty for flights and hotels — prices don't spike unless you're landing on Carnival weekend or Valentine's Day. If you want a specific boutique hotel in Lisbon or a wine-tour slot on a weekend, book the hotel and tour two months ahead; otherwise February is forgiving.

What to do
What February is made for.
On the calendar
- Carnival parades in Torres Vedras, Ovar and Loulé (mid/late February)
- Almond blossom in the Algarve (late February into early March)
Pack for February
- Waterproof jacket or compact umbrella — showers are frequent, especially in Porto
- Layers: light sweater or fleece for cool mornings and evenings, T-shirt for mild afternoons
- Comfortable walking shoes that can handle wet cobblestones
- Scarf and long pants for churches and cooler days
- Sunglasses — winter sun is still bright, especially in the Algarve
Know before you go
- Skip the Algarve beaches — water is 59°F and it's windy — but the coastal walks (Seven Hanging Valleys, Costa Vicentina) are empty and dramatic.
- Lisbon and Porto are the February plays: museums, food tours, tile-hunting, and café time without the summer scrum.
- Book Carnival weekend (mid/late February) hotels two months ahead in Torres Vedras, Ovar or Loulé; everywhere else is wide open.
- Douro Valley tours run all winter — vines are bare, but you'll have quintas and the river to yourself, and port tastes the same.
- Restaurants and trams take walk-ins; you don't need reservations outside Carnival weekend and Valentine's Day.
- Golf packages in the Algarve are the winter deals — fairways are green, empty, and half summer rates.
- Pack an umbrella and a good attitude about rain — you're trading weather certainty for prices and elbow room, and it's worth it.
