Things to do 5 ways to do it

Benagil Cave Tours

Benagil Cave is the Algarve's most Instagrammed sea cave — a cathedral-sized dome with a collapsed roof that spills light onto the sand inside. Since 2023, stricter rules have banned boats from landing on the beach and limited anchoring time, so you'll view from the water or paddle in yourself. The experience depends heavily on which departure point you pick and whether you're willing to earn the shot by kayak.

Pick your way

The ways to do it — honestly compared.

Way 1

From a shared speedboat out of Portimão or Albufeira

Fast, cheap, and straightforward. These two-hour tours depart from either Portimão (closer to Benagil) or Albufeira (busier marina), cruise the coast, and pause for photos inside the cave. You won't land, but you'll get the view and the Instagram proof without the shoulder burn.

Why you'll love it

  • Cheapest boat option at $32–35 per person
  • Quick two-hour commitment; easy to slot into a beach day
  • Portimão departure gets you to Benagil faster with less marina traffic
  • Often includes dolphin watching and other caves

Worth knowing

  • Shared boat means you're on the guide's timeline for photos
  • Can't linger inside the cave under new anchoring rules
  • Weather-dependent; choppier water east of Lagos
  • Albufeira departures add 30+ minutes each way

Best for: Budget travelers who want the shot without the cardio, or anyone short on time who's already staying in Portimão or Albufeira.

Typical price: $32–35 per person

Way 2

Self-guided by kayak from Benagil Beach

You rent a kayak in Lagoa, get a route briefing, and paddle the 90-minute loop yourself. This is the only way to legally get onto the beach inside the cave now, and you control your own timing. The paddle is manageable in calm conditions but exhausting if wind picks up.

Why you'll love it

  • Cheapest way in at $29
  • Full control over timing and photo stops
  • You can still step onto the cave beach if you paddle in
  • Cliffs and arches between launch and cave are dramatic up close

Worth knowing

  • Physically demanding — 90 minutes of paddling, some of it against current
  • Weather kills the trip; wind or swell makes it unsafe
  • No guide to point out caves or adjust your route
  • You're responsible for timing the return before fatigue sets in

Best for: Confident paddlers who want the cave to themselves and don't mind working for it. Skip if you're not in decent shape or if wind is forecast.

Typical price: $29 per person

Way 3

Private yacht charter from Vilamoura

Book the entire boat — a Sunseeker Portofino 53 or similar — for a half-day or afternoon run to Benagil. You get the flybridge, the swim platform, the crew, and total control over where you stop and how long you stay. This is the luxury version, priced accordingly.

Why you'll love it

  • Private boat means no strangers, no rush, full scheduling control
  • Afternoon departures catch better light and calmer water
  • Sunbathing deck, swim stops, and bar service included
  • Crew handles navigation and timing around new cave rules

Worth knowing

  • Starts at $1,617 for three hours, up to $3,411 for a half-day
  • Only makes sense if you're splitting the cost across a group
  • Vilamoura is farther east, so longer transit to Benagil
  • Overkill if the cave is your only goal

Best for: Groups celebrating something, or anyone who wants the Algarve coast experience without the cattle-call vibe. Best value for 6+ people splitting the charter.

Typical price: $1,617–3,411 per boat (not per person)

Way 4

Private speedboat at sunrise or sunset

One-hour private boat tour from Portimão, timed to catch Benagil Cave in golden hour light. You're paying for the timing and the exclusivity — the boat is yours, the cave is emptier, and the photos are objectively better. Shortest commitment of the private options.

Why you'll love it

  • Golden hour light makes the cave's dome glow
  • Private boat at the most affordable private tier ($404)
  • Fewer boats in the cave at sunrise or sunset
  • One-hour duration is tight but sufficient if Benagil is your only target

Worth knowing

  • Sunrise requires a brutal wake-up call
  • One hour doesn't leave room for detours or extra caves
  • Still $400+ for what amounts to a photo op
  • Weather is less predictable at dawn

Best for: Photographers or couples who want the shot without crowds and can afford to pay for the privilege. The light difference is real.

Typical price: $404 per boat

Way 5

Clifftop hike with the cave as backdrop

Three-hour guided walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Praia da Marinha to Benagil Beach. You see the cave from above through the skylight hole, along with the rest of the Algarve's clifftop drama. No boat required, and you skip the new water-access restrictions entirely.

Why you'll love it

  • See the cave's iconic skylight from the rim — a completely different perspective
  • Trail covers seven valleys of clifftop scenery, not just Benagil
  • Only $41 and no weather cancellations unless it's storming
  • Guide points out geology and routes you might miss solo

Worth knowing

  • You never get inside the cave — viewpoint only
  • Three hours of hiking with elevation; not for anyone with mobility limits
  • Trail can be exposed and hot in summer
  • Photos from above don't deliver the same postcard shot

Best for: Hikers who'd rather earn the view on foot, or anyone who wants the Algarve coast without the boat dependency. The clifftop angle is underrated.

Typical price: $41 per person

Before you go

  • New rules (2023) ban boats from landing on the cave beach and limit how long they can anchor inside — expect to view from the water on motorized tours.
  • Kayakers can still paddle onto the beach legally, making self-guided kayak the only way to step inside the cave now.
  • Portimão departures are closer to Benagil than Albufeira or Vilamoura — shorter transit, more time at the cave.
  • Book kayak or boat trips for early morning if possible; wind picks up by midday and can cancel afternoon departures.
  • If you're chartering a private boat and splitting cost, the per-person price drops fast — a $1,617 charter for six people is $270 each.
  • The clifftop viewpoint above Benagil Cave is free, requires no booking, and delivers a perspective you won't get from the water — worth the detour even if you also take a boat.
