The Family Trip

This is the Algarve trip where your kids remember the pool slides more than the castles, and that's exactly the point. Six days in Albufeira or nearby, built around shallow beaches, animal encounters, and resorts with proper kids' clubs — gentle mornings, one anchor activity per day, and zero stress about late dinners or long drives.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival & Settling In

    Afternoon

Land in Faro, pick up your transfer, and drive straight to your resort in Albufeira. Check in, let the kids find the pool, and keep this day simple — you're adjusting to the time zone and the heat.

    Evening

Walk to a nearby family restaurant for grilled fish and fries, nothing fancy. Early dinner, early bedtime — tomorrow starts the real vacation.

  2. Day 2

    Beach Morning, Pool Afternoon

    Morning

Head to Praia da Falésia or Praia da Oura — wide sand, shallow water, enough space for the kids to dig and splash without you hovering. Pack snacks, set up an umbrella, and let the morning stretch out.

    Afternoon

Back to the resort for lunch and pool time. If your hotel has a kids' club, this is when you test it out — let them do crafts while you sit with a book for twenty minutes.

    Evening

Casual dinner at the resort or a nearby pizzeria. No one's dressing up, no one's staying out late.

  3. Day 3

    Boat Trip to Benagil Cave

    Morning

Book a family-friendly boat tour to Benagil Cave — the speedboat option keeps it short (around two hours), and the kids will love the cathedral-sized dome with the collapsed roof. You'll cruise past a dozen other caves and rock formations, and everyone stays dry.

    Afternoon

Lunch back in Albufeira, then pool or beach time depending on energy levels. Don't stack a second big activity today — the boat was enough.

    Evening

Early dinner at the resort or a nearby spot with outdoor seating and a kids' menu.

  4. Day 4

    Animals & Easy Exploration

    Morning

Drive to the Algarve's animal circuit — the Butterfly Farm in Albufeira, the Donkey Sanctuary near Estoi, or the Ostrich Farm outside Portimão. Pick one or two, not all three. The ostrich farm has a short tour and a playground, the donkey sanctuary is calmer and shadier.

    Afternoon

Stop for lunch somewhere simple, then head back to the resort. Let the kids swim while you sit by the pool with a cold drink and no agenda.

    Evening

Dinner at the resort or a nearby grill. Keep it easy — grilled chicken, fries, ice cream for dessert.

  5. Day 5

    All-Day Resort or Beach

    Morning

No schedule today. Sleep in if the kids let you, then spend the morning at the beach or resort pool. If your hotel has a kids' club with activities, let them join a session while you read or nap.

    Afternoon

Lunch at the resort, then more pool time or a walk into Albufeira's old town if everyone's feeling restless. The cobbled streets and ice cream shops are enough entertainment.

    Evening

Casual dinner in town or back at the resort. No big plans — this is a recovery day between activities.

  6. Day 6

One Last Beach Morning & Departure Prep

    Morning

One final beach session at whichever spot became your favorite — Praia da Falésia, Praia da Oura, or the stretch nearest your resort. Let the kids play while you mentally pack and enjoy the last bit of sun.

    Afternoon

Check out, grab lunch on the way to the airport, and head to Faro with plenty of time to spare. Keep the drive calm and the mood easy — you're all leaving more relaxed than you arrived.

Know before you go

  • Book resorts with kids' clubs and multiple pools — Jupiter Albufeira and Club Med Da Balaia both deliver on this front, and the clubs buy you real downtime.
  • The Algarve beaches are not all created equal for kids. Praia da Falésia and Praia da Oura have gentle slopes and shallow water; the dramatic cliff beaches near Lagos look stunning but aren't where you want toddlers running loose.
  • Boat tours to Benagil Cave get busy in summer — book the earliest morning departure you can manage, and bring hats and sunscreen. The boats have no shade.
  • The animal attractions (Butterfly Farm, Donkey Sanctuary, Ostrich Farm) are small-scale and low-key, which is perfect for this age group. Don't expect theme-park polish; expect genuine animals and minimal crowds.
  • Portuguese restaurants are shockingly kid-friendly — grilled fish, chicken, fries, and rice appear on every menu, and no one blinks if your four-year-old eats pasta at 6 p.m.
  • Rent a car. The Algarve's public transport exists but isn't built for families with beach gear, car seats, and unpredictable nap schedules.
  • June through September is peak season — the water's warmest, but the beaches and restaurants are also the most crowded. May and late September are the sweet spot if your kids' school schedule allows it.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen and reapply it constantly. The Algarve sun is stronger than it looks, and kids burn fast even when it's breezy.
