The Anniversary Trip

This is the Portugal trip that doesn't rush. Five days split between Lisbon's quiet elegance and the Algarve's clifftop calm, built around the country's best tables, a private boat at sunset, and mornings that start when you're ready. It's for couples who want the anniversary version — refined, unhurried, worth remembering.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Lisbon

    Afternoon

Land in Lisbon, private transfer to your hotel. Check into Pestana Palace Lisboa — a 19th-century estate in west Lisbon with gardens that feel removed from the city. Settle in, nap if the flight was long.

    Evening

Walk to a quiet neighborhood tasca for your first proper meal — something small, unfussy, where the wine list is scribbled on a chalkboard. Let the jet lag guide the pace.

  2. Day 2

    Sintra and Cascais

    Morning

Private driver picks you up mid-morning for Sintra. Skip the palace crowds and focus on the gardens at Quinta da Regaleira and the clifftop castle ruins at Moorish Castle — the views matter more than the interiors.

    Afternoon

Late lunch at Fortaleza do Guincho — a Relais & Châteaux property inside a 17th-century fortress on Guincho Beach. The Michelin-starred restaurant overlooks the Atlantic; book the tasting menu.

    Evening

Drive back through Cascais, stop for a drink along the waterfront if you're not ready to head in. Otherwise, straight back to the hotel — you've earned the downtime.

  3. Day 3

    Lisbon at your pace

    Morning

Sleep in. Late breakfast at the hotel, then a private walking food tour through Alfama and Baixa — pastéis de nata from the source, petiscos in century-old tascas, ginjinha if you're feeling it. Your guide tailors the route to what you actually want to eat.

    Afternoon

Free afternoon. Wander the Chiado bookshops, sit in a miradouro with a book, or head back to the hotel if the day feels full enough already.

    Evening

Private sunset sail on the Tagus — just the two of you, a sailboat, wine, and the light turning the 25 de Abril Bridge gold overhead. Two hours on the water, zero agenda.

  4. Day 4

    Transfer to the Algarve

    Morning

Private transfer south to the Algarve with two stops: a winery lunch in the Alentejo countryside and a quick walk through Évora's old town if you're not over-fed. The drive takes most of the day but it's worth skipping the flight.

    Evening

Check into Vila Joya near Albufeira — a two-Michelin-starred clifftop property where the restaurant is the reason to stay. Dinner at the hotel; book the tasting menu and let them pace the evening.

  5. Day 5

    Algarve coast

    Morning

Slow start. Breakfast on your terrace, ocean in full view. No rush — this is the kind of morning you're here for.

    Afternoon

Private boat charter in the afternoon — Benagil Cave, the Ponta da Piedade arches, champagne on deck as the cliffs turn orange in late light. It's the classic Algarve experience, done right.

    Evening

Back to Vila Joya for a final dinner, or drive into Carvoeiro for something simpler if you'd rather end the trip low-key. Either way, the trip wraps here — departure is tomorrow, but tonight still counts.

Know before you go

  • Book Vila Joya's restaurant as soon as you confirm dates — it's two Michelin stars on a small property, and tables go fast.
  • Fortaleza do Guincho is similarly tight; reserve the lunch seating when you book Sintra.
  • The Lisbon-to-Algarve transfer works best if you're okay with a full travel day — if you'd rather fly, the Faro airport is 45 minutes from Vila Joya.
  • Private sunset sails on the Tagus fill up in summer; book a week or two ahead if you're traveling May through September.
  • Sintra's palaces get mobbed by mid-morning — your private driver can time it to beat the tour buses, but the gardens and castle ruins are the better move anyway.
  • The Algarve boat charters leave from Portimão, Albufeira, or Vilamoura; your hotel can coordinate pickup, or your driver can route you there.
  • Portugal's Michelin-starred restaurants tend to close one or two days a week — double-check before you lock in your itinerary.
  • If you want a couples massage or spa day, Pestana Palace and Vila Joya both have strong in-house spas; book treatments when you check in.
