Algarve Golf: Which Courses to Play, What They Cost, and Where to Stay to Walk to the First Tee

Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura, Monte Rei and the west — the Algarve's courses compared on difficulty, green fees and setting, with the hotels guests recommend for a golf week.

By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know

Base a golf week in Vilamoura: five courses inside one development, the widest spread of hotels at every price, and a marina full of restaurants for the evenings. Stay in Quinta do Lago or Vale do Lobo instead if you want the classic golden-triangle week — quieter, pricier, and you can walk to the tee. And whichever you choose, drive east one morning for Monte Rei, the one round in the Algarve that people fly in for.

The courses

We don't hold current green-fee figures, so the bands below are relative — from cheapest to dearest within the Algarve — and you should check the club's own booking page for the day's rate. Book-ahead advice reflects how these courses behave in the October–May season.

Three notes. Quinta do Lago South and Monte Rei are the two rounds a serious golfer shouldn't skip. The Vilamoura Old Course is the one everyone comes back to. And the Laguna, Millennium and Pinhal trio is where you fill the rest of the week without emptying your wallet.

The areas, and where to sleep

Vilamoura

The Vilamoura base guide covers the town; for golf the point is that five Dom Pedro courses plus Vila Sol sit inside a couple of miles of each other, with a shuttle-and-buggy culture that means you rarely need the car during the day. The hotels with the deepest review history on file:

Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo

The golden triangle east of Vilamoura, closest to Faro airport — the getting there guide puts the drive at about 25 minutes. Villas and small hotels rather than big complexes; the course hotels sell out for spring. We don't have review-rich listings here, so browse the hotel listings for the current stock and expect the highest nightly rates in the region.

Albufeira, for the value week

West of Vilamoura and cheaper, with a couple of golf-branded properties. Balaia Golf Village (3.9, 1,398 reviews, around $400 a night) gets clean-apartment praise and a run of complaints about half-board arrangements and front-desk service — read recent reviews before you commit. Club Med Da Balaia draws consistent five-star reviews for its organized golf lessons and a large activities program, though one regular notes the rooms are aging and a lesson booking system that's in-person only, the day before. Both work for a mixed group where only half plays.

Carvoeiro, Lagos and the west

Further west is quieter, with Penina and Palmares as the courses. Vila Vita Parc in Carvoeiro earns five-star reviews for its own nine-hole pitch-and-putt — guests mention playing it every morning after breakfast — which is a different proposition from a championship week but perfect for a couple where one of you plays.

The east, for Monte Rei

Tavira is the town for it. Vila Galé Tavira draws a lot of golfers — one reviewer notes breakfast is busy early because the golf guests are out at first light — and the town itself is the prettiest in the Algarve.

Outside the Algarve, Penha Longa Resort in Sintra is the Lisbon-side golf stay, with guests praising the course a few minutes from the hotel; it's the answer if you want two rounds in a city trip rather than a golf week.

Costs, and how to pay less

  • Play the season, not the summer. October through May is when the courses are in condition and the weather is right; rates are highest in March, April and October and cheaper in December and January. The October guide and the March guide have the temperatures.
  • Twilight rates. Most clubs discount tee times from mid-afternoon; in October that's still three hours of daylight.
  • Multi-round passes. Vilamoura's Dom Pedro courses and the Quinta do Lago group each sell multi-round packages that beat paying per round — ask the hotel to book them, since the best bundles are often through the golf desk.
  • Buggies are usually extra and often compulsory in summer. Walk in October.
  • Lessons. Lesters Golf runs sessions at $100 for two hours with a 5.0 rating across 148 reviews if someone in the group is starting from scratch.
  • Getting there. Fly into Faro; the golden triangle and Vilamoura are 25 minutes away, Lagos over an hour. Rent a car unless you're staying inside Vilamoura for the whole week.

The season

October to May is golf season, with a bump in demand around Easter and the autumn half-terms. Late October is layered-clothing weather — a community member packing for that window advised jeans, a sweater and a jacket for the evenings — and the greens are at their best after the summer. July and August are hot, buggies are mandatory on some courses, and the hotels are full of families rather than foursomes; if that's when you must go, tee off at 7:30.

Days off the course

For the non-golfers and the rest days, Vilamoura's marina is the launch point. The Vilamoura: Dolphins & Benagil Caves trip is $40 for three hours (4.4, 44 reviews), though the Benagil hub explains that Portimão departures get you to the cave faster. The Vilamoura, Albufeira & Porches wine, tapas and music tour is $75 for two hours (4.7, 282). Quinta Quads runs two-hour off-road sessions at $75 (5.0, 703). For a proper splurge, the Afternoon Cruise on a Sunseeker Portofino 53 is $1,617 for the boat for three hours, which for a foursome sharing beats a round at Monte Rei. And the Loulé and Estoi Palace private tour at $202 for seven hours (5.0, 24) is the inland day — market, palace, hill villages — for whoever is done with sand and fairways.
