The Best Day Trips in Portugal: From Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve

From Lisbon, do Sintra; from Porto, do the Douro; from the Algarve, do Benagil from the water. Those three are the day trips that justify a whole day and a booking. Everything else on this list is a good second choice depending on what you like — and about half of them (Évora, Arrábida, Sagres, the Fátima loop) are really car or tour trips, not train trips, so plan them accordingly.

From Lisbon

Sintra

The most popular day trip in the country, and the Sintra day-trips hub explains why the logistics are the hard part: tickets for Pena and Regaleira sell out days ahead, the 434 bus queues by 10:30, and parking is a nightmare. DIY is the train from Rossio and the bus, around €35–50 a person with two palaces. Tours handle it: the Sintra and Cascais Small-Group Day Trip is $57 for 8 hours (4.8, 7,988 reviews) and the best value; Sintra, Pena and Regaleira with Tickets Included is $139 (4.9, 1,214) if you want the tickets solved; the customizable private Sintra trip is $179 (4.98, 1,997). Arrive by 9:30, wear real shoes and skip Cabo da Roca unless you want a 20-minute cliff photo.

Cascais

Forty minutes on the train from Cais do Sodré, no booking, no guide. Beach, the old-town lunch, the coastal path toward Guincho. It's a half day, and one community regular prefers it to Sintra precisely because it asks nothing of you; another says Sintra has more to offer and Cascais is skippable. Both are right — it depends whether you want palaces or a sea wall. The Cascais area page covers basing there instead.

Óbidos

A walled medieval village an hour north. Alone it's a two-hour walk on the ramparts, a ginjinha in a chocolate cup and lunch; it's usually folded into the Fátima loop below. Go on a weekday — weekends mob it — and bring cash for the small shops.

Évora

Ninety minutes by train or car into the Alentejo: Roman temple, the bone chapel, a cathedral you can climb, and the best pork and red wine of the trip. Only 7 tour products exist, so most people drive; the community's route advice is to skip the highway for the national roads and accept arriving later. Parking inside the walls is limited — arrive early. Monsaraz, an hour further east, is the add-on people fall for.

Arrábida and Sesimbra

South across the bridge to a limestone ridge that drops into turquoise water, with Setúbal's moscatel and Sesimbra's fish. A car trip or a private tour: the Private Lisbon Arrábida Wine Tour is $133 for 7 hours (4.8, 983 reviews) and pairs estate tastings with a coast stop and lunch.

Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos

The other marquee loop — shrine, hundred-foot winter waves, walled town — is 9–10 hours and works far better on a tour than by public transport. The Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos Small-Group Day Trip is $92 (4.9, 1,273 reviews). Nazaré's giant waves only show October through March; the Fátima candle procession runs at 9:30 p.m. May through October. The Fátima, Óbidos and Nazaré hub covers the monastery add-ons. Avoid the Porto, Nazaré and Óbidos in One Day tour — $76, 13 hours, 550 kilometers of highway, and Porto deserves better.

From Porto

Douro Valley

Non-negotiable, and a full day: the community is unanimous that a half-day version doesn't work. The Douro Valley: Historical Sites, Wine Experience, Lunch & Cruise tour is $103 for 10 hours (4.8, 6,698 reviews); the small-group two-wineries tour is $115 (4.9, 1,707) with a cap of eight. The train to Pinhão is the cheap version. The Douro hub has the full comparison and makes the case for a night in the valley.

Guimarães and Braga

Portugal's birthplace and its church capital, an hour apart and both reachable by train, though a tour pairs them without the connections: the Best of Braga and Guimarães Day Trip is $54 for 9 hours (4.7, 3,322 reviews). Bom Jesus's staircase in Braga is the photo; Guimarães's old town is the better wander. A community member with four nights in Porto counted this as a natural third day after the Douro.

Aveiro

An hour south by train, and a place one community member compares favorably to Venice for its canals and painted boats. It's a half day — the Aveiro and Costa Nova Half Day Tour with Boat Ride is $45 for 4 hours (4.6, 2,781 reviews) — or a stop on the way to Lisbon: the Porto to Lisbon transfer with up to 4 stops is $185 (4.96, 1,086) and turns travel time into sightseeing.

From the Algarve

Benagil and the caves

Since 2023 boats can't land inside the cave, so the choice is a speedboat pass-through or a kayak paddle in. From Albufeira, the Dolphins Search and Benagil Caves trip is $38 for 2.5 hours (4.9, 5,401 reviews); from Carvoeiro, the Benagil Long Boat tour to Praia da Marinha is $40 (4.9, 1,492); the small-group kayak tour is $46 (4.9, 1,877) and the only way to stand on the sand. Go early before the wind. The Benagil hub covers departure points and the free clifftop view.

Sagres and the west coast

The end of Europe: fortress, lighthouse, and beaches with real surf. Only 9 tour products exist (median $75), so it's mostly a drive from Lagos — 40 minutes — with Cabo de São Vicente for sunset. The water is colder and rougher than the south coast; it's for looking, not floating.

Tavira and the Ria Formosa

East of Faro the coast turns to lagoon and sandbar islands, and Tavira is the prettiest town in the region. The train runs from Faro; the ferry to Ilha de Tavira is the beach. A community member suggests Faro, Tavira and Lagos as a trio of easy days. Quieter and cheaper than the central beach towns; the Tavira area page explains basing there.

Seville, briefly

Two hours by car from Tavira, more by coach. It's a great city and a bad day trip — you'll spend five hours on the road for six in Seville in the heat. Do it as an overnight or not at all.

Train, tour or car: the rule of thumb

Train when there's a direct line and the destination is walkable from the station: Sintra, Cascais, Aveiro, Évora, Tavira. Tour when the sights are spread out or tickets are the bottleneck: Sintra if you didn't book Pena, the Douro, the Fátima loop, Braga plus Guimarães, Benagil (a boat is a tour). Car when the point is the road or the stops are villages: Arrábida, Sagres, the Alentejo. And the community's most repeated advice is about pacing, not transport: two bases for an eight-day trip, not three, and one day trip per base before you add a second. The getting around guide covers when a car is worth it; the trip planner will tell you which of these fits your dates.
