Time Out Market Lisboa is a $$ portuguese & international casual restaurant in Lisbon rated 4.3/5 by 8,284 TripAdvisor reviewers; walk-ins welcome.

About

Time Out Market Lisboa fills the renovated Mercado da Ribeira hall in Cais do Sodré with about two dozen stalls curated by the magazine's editors. The concept is a food hall where each vendor has a known reputation elsewhere in Lisbon — you can bounce from one chef's bacalhau to another's croquetes without changing neighborhoods. The 4.3 food rating across more than eight thousand reviews backs up the quality, even if the service and value scores suggest the model trades intimacy for volume. You order at individual counters, find a seat at communal tables, and eat under the iron-and-glass ceiling. It's efficient if you're hungry and indecisive, or traveling with people who can't agree on a single cuisine. The atmosphere score reflects the buzz, but that also means noise and jockeying for tables during peak lunch and dinner windows. The mid-range pricing holds across most stalls, though portions vary. If you want the vendors without the scrum, note their standalone addresses and go there instead.

Tours & things to do nearby

Yellow Cab TT Tours

Yellow Cab TT Tours runs half-day loops around Lisbon in vintage yellow cabs—actual refurbished taxis that seat four. The 5/5 average across 3,500+ reviews suggests they've sorted out the basics: drivers who can talk, routes that don't drag, and timing that respects the rest of your day. Four hours means you're hitting the postcard stops—Belém, Alfama, the overlooks—without grinding through a full-day itinerary. The format works if you want someone else handling the hills and the parking. It's outdoor in the sense that you're stopping to walk around, not just staring through glass, but you're in a car for most of it. Intensity is low; this isn't a walking tour. Price sits at $75, which is middle ground for a private-ish setup—you're sharing the cab unless you book it out. Operates directly, so you book through them. Based on Avenida da Liberdade, which means pickups skew central. If you're short on time and long on jet lag, it does the job.

Taste of Lisboa Food Tours

Taste of Lisboa runs walking food tours through three Lisbon neighborhoods—Campo de Ourique, Mouraria, and Baixa—with groups stopping at local bakeries, markets, and hole-in-the-wall spots most visitors walk past. The 5/5 rating across 2,580 reviews suggests the guides know their routes cold. Three hours is enough to cover a dozen tastings without turning it into a forced march, and the pace stays conversational. You'll eat standing at counters, sample what's seasonal, and hear the backstory on why certain bakeries matter to the neighborhood. The outdoor format means you're moving between stops rather than sitting through a lecture, which works better in Lisbon's compact center. At $75, it's priced in line with other small-group food tours here, though the review volume sets it apart. Book direct through their site. Wear comfortable shoes—Mouraria's hills aren't optional.

Lisbon Explorer Private Tours

Lisbon Explorer Private Tours operates out of Lisbon with a 5/5 rating across 1,609 reviews, which suggests something's working. Private tours mean you're not herded onto a coach with forty strangers — the format's built around your pace and interests, not a fixed route. The volume of reviews at that rating is the notable signal here; it's not a side project. The private structure matters if you want to skip lines, adjust timing on the fly, or dig into specifics the group tours gloss over. Guides can reroute when a neighborhood's packed or a site's closed for lunch. Whether that flexibility justifies the premium depends on how you travel, but the rating consistency across that many bookings isn't common. Expect pickup coordination and English-speaking guides as standard. Private tours in Lisbon typically cover the hills, Belém, and Alfama, though the exact itinerary depends on what you arrange upfront.

What travelers are saying.

Steady

Low confidence

Travelers say Time Out Market delivers variety under one roof—two dozen curated stalls let you sample everything from bacalhau to sushi tacos without leaving Mercado da Ribeira. The buzz is real, but so is the noise and the scramble for communal seating during lunch and dinner rushes. Arrive before noon or after 3pm to avoid the 25–30 minute table hunt. Prices run higher than standalone Lisbon restaurants—€19 burgers and premium portions—but the quality holds across most vendors, especially seafood and croquetes. The metro stop is directly across the street.

“We liked the food after we found a seat which took us at least twenty five to thirty minutes”
Noise levels force shouting across tables—music rattles and atmosphere feels more like a school hall than intimate dining
17 mentions
“Very noisy music rattles no one can be heard most people shout each other out”
Prices significantly higher than typical Lisbon restaurants—€19 burgers and premium mark-ups compared to standalone locations
14 mentions

Tips from travelers

Arrive before noon or between 3–5pm to avoid the 25–30 minute table scramble
Send one person to claim a table before ordering food—don't collect orders until seated
Skip the octodog unless you enjoy rubbery texture drenched in mayo
Check vendor standalone addresses if you want the same food without the scrum

Maybe skip if: Travelers seeking intimate Portuguese dining or budget meals should choose neighborhood tascas instead—the market trades atmosphere for volume and charges restaurant prices without table service.

Frade dos Mares

Frade dos Mares is a seafood spot in Lisbon's waterfront district, a few blocks from the Tagus. The 4.8 rating across 6,000+ reviews isn't typical for a mid-range restaurant — most fall apart at scale, but the subratings hold steady across food, service, and atmosphere, which means they've figured out consistency. The kitchen leans Portuguese seafood, and the value rating at 4.6 suggests portions and pricing line up. Service matches the food score, so expect the room to move without much friction. The atmosphere rating implies they've kept it comfortable without leaning into theme-park nautical decor. It's the kind of place that works because it doesn't try to be more than it is: solid seafood, fair prices, staff who know the menu. If you want something polished without the markup of the tourist traps closer to Belém, this is the move.

Manteigaria - Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata - Chiado

Manteigaria sits on Largo de Camões in Chiado, and it does one thing: custard tarts straight from the oven. The 4.9 food rating comes from getting the fundamentals right — crisp pastry, creamy center, the right char on top — and serving them warm every time. Lines form, but they move because the operation is tight and the menu is short. The space is half bakery, half counter seating with a view of the production line. You watch the tarts come out, grab two or three with an espresso, and you're done. The value rating reflects what you'd expect: these cost about what a tart should cost in Lisbon, which is not much. It's cheap because it's efficient, not because it's cutting corners. If you want pastéis without the Belém trek or the tourist markup, this works. Expect to stand or perch. Expect it to be busy. The tarts justify both.

Cervejaria Ramiro

Cervejaria Ramiro is a seafood hall on Avenida Almirante Reis in Lisbon, and it's been packing tables for decades. The draw is simple: shellfish from the Atlantic, cooked fast, served on trays. You order prawns, crab, percebes, whatever's in season, they grill or boil it, and you crack it open yourself. The 4.6 food rating holds up — people tolerate the warehouse vibe and the wait because the product is that fresh. It's mid-range on price, which in this context means you can run up a bill quickly if you're not watching the weight. The prego steak sandwich at the end is a ritual — carb ballast after a kilo of shrimp. Lines form before opening, especially on weekends. If you arrive at 7 p.m. without a reservation, expect to stand outside for an hour. The service moves efficiently once you're seated, but the atmosphere score reflects the reality: it's loud, fluorescent-lit, and unapologetically functional.

Hotel Avenida Palace

Hotel Avenida Palace sits across from Rossio station in central Lisbon, in a 1892 building that still looks like 1892—marble, gilding, period elevators. The 5.0 location score isn't surprising; you're equidistant from Baixa, Chiado, and the main metro interchange, and most of the city's core sights are a ten-minute walk. The 4.8 overall rating across 5,000+ reviews is unusually high for a heritage property this old, and the subratings back it up—service and cleanliness both at 4.8, sleep quality at 4.7. Rooms skew traditional (heavy drapes, carved furniture), which some people love and others find dated; the 4.6 room score suggests it's divisive. Value at 4.6 is solid for this location and level of upkeep. If you want modern minimalism, this isn't it. If you want to stay somewhere that actually feels like old Lisbon and you can walk everywhere, it works.

Lisbon

Hotel Britania Art Deco

Hotel Britania Art Deco sits on a quiet street in central Lisbon, a few blocks up from Avenida da Liberdade. It's a preserved 1940s building designed by Cassiano Branco, and the Art Deco details — marble columns, geometric panels, original fixtures — are the main attraction. The 4.9 service rating is higher than the rooms rating, which tells you something about how the place runs. Staff handle the small things without being asked, and the building's layout means you're not navigating a massive lobby or fighting for elevator space. The location subrating sits at 4.7, which is fair — you're walkable to Rossio and Chiado but not quite in the thick of either. It's more residential than touristy, which some people prefer. Value comes in at 4.6, reasonable for a boutique property in this part of the city. If you want period architecture that hasn't been gutted and redone as a lifestyle hotel, this is one of the better options in Lisbon.

Lisbon

Corinthia Lisbon

Corinthia Lisbon is a full-service hotel near Sete Rios, a few metro stops from the historic center. The 4.4 rating across more than 7,000 reviews holds steady on the details that matter — sleep quality and cleanliness both sit at 4.6, and rooms score 4.5. Service matches that at 4.5, which for a property this size isn't a given. The location rating of 4.0 reflects what you'd expect: it's not in Baixa or Belém, but it's well connected by metro and easier to navigate by car if you're planning day trips. The quieter setting also means better sleep, which the subratings confirm. Value comes in at 4.3, reasonable for the category in Lisbon. It's a straightforward choice if you want a reliable base with strong execution on the basics — good beds, clean rooms, consistent service — without paying for a postcard address.

Pasteis de Belem

Pastéis de Belém is the original pastry shop in Belém where Portugal's famous egg tarts have been made since 1837, using the same recipe the whole time. The line wraps around the block most days — 54,000+ reviews put it squarely in institution territory — but it moves. You can grab a box to go from the counter or sit in one of the tiled dining rooms in back, where waiters in vests bring coffee and you order by the half-dozen. The tarts come out warm, the custard wobbles, and you dust them with cinnamon and powdered sugar at the table. The 4.6 food rating reflects the fact that people don't argue about whether these are good — they argue about whether anywhere else comes close. It's cheap, it's cash-friendly, and the atmosphere is more functional than precious. You're here for one thing. Get it, eat it, keep moving.
