Saudade is a $$ portuguese & cafe local restaurant in Sintra rated 4.6/5 by 2,779 TripAdvisor reviewers; walk-ins welcome.

About

Saudade sits in central Sintra, a short walk from the train station, and it feels less like a tourist pit stop than most places this close to the palaces. The kitchen turns out straightforward Portuguese café food — bacalhau, grilled meats, soup — and the 4.7 atmosphere rating tracks with the tile-lined interior and the fact that locals actually eat here. The numbers say it all: 2,779 reviews holding a 4.6, with matching marks across food, service, and value. Mid-range pricing means you're looking at €12–€18 mains, and the place handles kids without making a fuss about it. No reservations needed, which is useful if you're coming off a morning at Pena Palace and need something reliable without the wait. It won't change your life, but it's the kind of place where the menu makes sense, the portions are honest, and you leave without feeling like you paid a Sintra tax.

Tours & things to do nearby

Wonder Van

Wonder Van runs small-group tours out of Sintra that handle the logistics most visitors get wrong — timing the palaces before crowds show up, parking near trailheads tourists don't know exist, skipping the ticket lines. The 5/5 average across 2,500+ reviews suggests they've figured out the formula: four-hour loops that hit two or three sites without the usual bottlenecks, guides who know which angles photograph best and when to move on. The format is cultural sightseeing at moderate intensity, which in Sintra terms means some uphill walking but nothing technical. They price at $75, positioning in the middle of the private-tour market — cheaper than a dedicated driver, more structured than renting a car and guessing. Most departures cover Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, or Quinta da Regaleira depending on the route, with time spent both indoors and outside on the grounds. Book direct through their site if you want to lock morning slots before they fill.

LAS Tours Sintra

LAS Tours Sintra runs half-day cultural tours out of Sintra, usually covering the big three — Pena Palace, the historic center, and either Quinta da Regaleira or the Moorish Castle depending on the route. The 5/5 rating across 1,544 reviews is unusually high for a tour operator at scale, which suggests the guides do more than recite Wikipedia. Most departures are four hours, mixed indoor and outdoor, and priced around $75. The intensity level stays moderate — you'll walk some hills and palace gardens, but it's built for general mobility, not hikers. Booking direct through their site tends to move faster than third-party platforms, and they run year-round with pickups in Sintra proper or coordination from Lisbon if you're day-tripping.

FlaminGO_Experiences

FlaminGO_Experiences runs Land Rover tours through the backcountry around Sintra, and after 570 reviews with a perfect score, they've figured out the formula. The four-hour route skips the palace crowds and instead heads into the hills—fire roads, old estates, view points most visitors never see. The intensity rating of 3 means it's not a white-knuckle rock crawl, but you're definitely leaving pavement behind. What stands out is the consistency. Keeping a 5.0 across that many reviews suggests they don't overbook, don't rush, and probably run smaller groups. At $75, it's priced below the polished coach tours but still includes a guide and the vehicle. You book directly through them, which usually means more flexibility if plans shift. It's a solid choice if you want to see the Sintra region from angles that aren't on postcards and don't mind a bit of dust on your shoes.

Incomum by Luis Santos

Incomum by Luis Santos is tucked into central Sintra, and it's the kind of casual spot locals actually use when they want something other than tourist-trap pastries. The kitchen runs international — not fusion for the sake of it, just dishes that pull from wherever makes sense. The 4.7 food rating across 3,400+ reviews suggests they're consistent about execution, which in a town this flooded with day-trippers is harder than it sounds. Mid-range pricing means you can eat well without the ceremony or the check shock of the region's fancier tables. Service and atmosphere both score high, and the vibe skews easygoing — families show up, couples show up, nobody's overdressed. Value comes in at 4.5, which tracks for Sintra, where location rent inflates everything. If you're staying overnight and need a real meal that isn't trying to prove anything, this works. No reservation required, but peak dinner hours in summer still fill up.

Restaurante Metamorphosis

Restaurante Metamorphosis is tucked into a side street in Sintra's town center, and it's punching way above its price tier. Over 2,000 reviews at 4.5 stars is unusual for a cheap-eats spot, but the subratings tell the story — food, service, value, and atmosphere all land above 4.5, which means they're doing something consistently right. The menu leans international, and the kitchen moves fast without cutting corners. The vibe is casual and the place is kid-friendly, so it works for families coming off a morning at the palaces who don't want to sit through a long formal lunch. No reservations required, which is convenient in Sintra where half the town books out in high season. Lines can form around 1 p.m., but turnover is quick. It's not a destination meal, but it's reliable and cheap in a town where that combination is harder to find than it should be.

Bacalhau na Vila

Bacalhau na Vila is a casual Portuguese seafood spot in the old town of Sintra, a few blocks from the main square. The name tells you where they're going with this — bacalhau means cod, and they do it at least six ways, all of them correct. The 4.7 rating across food, service, and value is consistent enough that you're not rolling dice here. The menu leans traditional Portuguese with a tilt toward whatever's fresh, so expect cataplana, grilled octopus, and rice dishes next to the cod options. Portions run generous and the pricing sits comfortably mid-range, which in Sintra tourist territory means you're not overpaying for proximity to the palace. It's kid-friendly if you need that, and they don't require reservations, though walking in at peak lunch can mean a wait. The atmosphere rating trails slightly behind food and service, which tracks — it's a straightforward dining room, not a design moment. You're here to eat well and get back to wandering Sintra's hills.

Penha Longa Resort

Penha Longa Resort sits in the hills outside Sintra, on a historic estate that runs right up to the national park. The property is old-monastery-turned-luxury-compound, and the 4.8 cleanliness and 4.7 room scores over 2,000 reviews suggest they take the upkeep seriously. You're here for the grounds—two championship golf courses, a serious spa, multiple pools—and the sense that you're in the countryside even though Lisbon is a half-hour drive. The 4.2 value rating is the tell. This is a splurge property, and whether it pencils out depends on how much you'll actually use what's on-site. If you're the type to post up at a resort for three days and make it your base, the trade-off works. If you're just sleeping here between day trips to Sintra or Cascais, you're paying for amenities you won't touch. Service scores are strong, location scores reflect the seclusion—you'll want a car.

Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais - The Leading Hotels Of The World

Valverde Sintra occupies an 18th-century palace in the hills above Sintra, close enough to the town center to walk but set back on its own grounds. It's part of The Leading Hotels of the World, which tells you most of what you need to know about the formality and the price tier. The 4.8 cleanliness and 4.7 service ratings track with that level of polish—this is not a place where corners get cut. The location subrating is also 4.7, which makes sense if you want a base for exploring Sintra's palaces and quintas without staying in the village scrum. You're on the upslope side, not the beach side, so it's not a coast resort despite the "palace hotel" designation. Rooms and sleep quality both sit at 4.6, which is strong but not exceptional at this price point. Value comes in at 4.3, the lowest of the set—expected when you're paying for heritage property overhead and brand positioning.

Sintra

Sintra Boutique Hotel

Sintra Boutique Hotel is tucked into the historic center of Sintra, a five-minute walk from the National Palace and the train station that connects you to Lisbon in under an hour. The location subrating sits at 4.9, which makes sense — you're in the middle of everything the town offers, but the 100-room property keeps a quiet profile with a low party score and a boutique feel. Sleep quality and cleanliness both score 4.8 or higher, and service matches that level. The rooms are small-scale European, not American sprawl, but they're well-kept. No beach here — Sintra is up in the hills — though the hotel runs a shuttle if you want the coast. Otherwise, you're here for the palaces, the gardens, and the cooler air. At around $400 a night, it's priced above the regional budget tier but below the headline quintas. The walkability score maxes out, so if you prefer to move around on foot and skip the car between sites, this works.

Nau Palatina

Nau Palatina is a casual Portuguese spot in Sintra where the staff is genuinely good at their job — 4.9 for service — and the kitchen turns out tapas and Mediterranean plates that hold a 4.8 across 800-plus reviews. It's the kind of place locals bring visitors when they want something reliable without the tourist-trap pricing: mid-range, strong value score, and the atmosphere rating suggests they've figured out the room. The menu covers vegetarian and vegan options alongside the standard Portuguese offerings, and it's kid-friendly without being a kids' menu operation. You can walk in without a reservation most days, though that flexibility cuts both ways depending on when Sintra is packed. The consistency across subratings is the real signal here — food, service, atmosphere all tight in the high 4s. That doesn't happen by accident in a town that sees as much foot traffic as Sintra does.
