Memmo Alfama Hotel is a 4.5-star hotel in Lisbon with 100 rooms rated 4.7/5 by 1,997 TripAdvisor reviewers; typical rates from about $450 a night.

About

Memmo Alfama sits halfway up the hill in Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, where the cobblestone streets are narrow enough that you'll hear your neighbor's fado practice. The location subrating is nearly perfect, and it makes sense—you're above the tram chaos but still walking distance to the riverfront. Rooms lean minimalist with terraces that look out over terracotta rooftops toward the Tagus, and the rooftop pool gets you above the laundry lines for a clean sightline. The 4.7 overall rating holds across nearly two thousand reviews, with service and cleanliness both at 4.7 and 4.9 respectively. That consistency suggests they're not winging it. The sleep quality score also sits at 4.7, which is notable in a neighborhood where sound carries. It's a boutique footprint in a district that doesn't have many hotels at all, so you're trading resort-scale amenities for being inside the actual fabric of the hill rather than watching it from a distance.

What travelers are saying.

Medium confidence

Travelers say Memmo Alfama delivers a boutique experience in Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, with rooftop terraces overlooking the Tagus River consistently praised across reviews. The staff earns specific mentions for personalized service—one concierge named Tiago arranges reservations and itineraries with minimal friction. Breakfast spreads include both buffet items like fresh papaya and made-to-order hot dishes, though some guests report waiting two days before staff mentioned the cooked egg option. Rooms run compact, especially the Mansard category, where two full suitcases create spatial problems.

Tips from travelers

Ask about cooked egg options at breakfast—staff don't always volunteer the full menu
Skip the Mansard room category if traveling with more than one suitcase per person
Book the complimentary neighborhood walking tour the hotel organizes

Maybe skip if: Travelers needing spacious rooms for extended unpacking or those requiring guaranteed air conditioning in all seasons should look elsewhere.

Hotel Avenida Palace

Hotel Avenida Palace sits across from Rossio station in central Lisbon, in a 1892 building that still looks like 1892—marble, gilding, period elevators. The 5.0 location score isn't surprising; you're equidistant from Baixa, Chiado, and the main metro interchange, and most of the city's core sights are a ten-minute walk. The 4.8 overall rating across 5,000+ reviews is unusually high for a heritage property this old, and the subratings back it up—service and cleanliness both at 4.8, sleep quality at 4.7. Rooms skew traditional (heavy drapes, carved furniture), which some people love and others find dated; the 4.6 room score suggests it's divisive. Value at 4.6 is solid for this location and level of upkeep. If you want modern minimalism, this isn't it. If you want to stay somewhere that actually feels like old Lisbon and you can walk everywhere, it works.

Hotel Britania Art Deco

Hotel Britania Art Deco sits on a quiet street in central Lisbon, a few blocks up from Avenida da Liberdade. It's a preserved 1940s building designed by Cassiano Branco, and the Art Deco details — marble columns, geometric panels, original fixtures — are the main attraction. The 4.9 service rating is higher than the rooms rating, which tells you something about how the place runs. Staff handle the small things without being asked, and the building's layout means you're not navigating a massive lobby or fighting for elevator space. The location subrating sits at 4.7, which is fair — you're walkable to Rossio and Chiado but not quite in the thick of either. It's more residential than touristy, which some people prefer. Value comes in at 4.6, reasonable for a boutique property in this part of the city. If you want period architecture that hasn't been gutted and redone as a lifestyle hotel, this is one of the better options in Lisbon.

Epic Sana Lisboa Hotel

Epic Sana Lisboa Hotel is a business-district tower in central Lisbon, a few blocks west of Marquês de Pombal. The 4.8 ratings for rooms, sleep quality, and cleanliness suggest they've nailed the fundamentals — quiet floors, good mattresses, turndown that actually happens. The 4.2 location score is honest; you're not in Baixa or Alfama, but you're also not fighting tourist crowds every time you leave the building, and the metro puts you anywhere in fifteen minutes. The value rating sits at 4.4, which for a full-service hotel in Lisbon means the rack rate includes things that would cost extra elsewhere — gym, pool, breakfast spread that doesn't run out by 9 a.m. Service scores a 4.6, so expect competence over charm. This is the place you book when you want a reliable room and a rooftop bar after a long day, not when you're chasing old-world atmosphere.

Lisbon

Frade dos Mares

Frade dos Mares is a seafood spot in Lisbon's waterfront district, a few blocks from the Tagus. The 4.8 rating across 6,000+ reviews isn't typical for a mid-range restaurant — most fall apart at scale, but the subratings hold steady across food, service, and atmosphere, which means they've figured out consistency. The kitchen leans Portuguese seafood, and the value rating at 4.6 suggests portions and pricing line up. Service matches the food score, so expect the room to move without much friction. The atmosphere rating implies they've kept it comfortable without leaning into theme-park nautical decor. It's the kind of place that works because it doesn't try to be more than it is: solid seafood, fair prices, staff who know the menu. If you want something polished without the markup of the tourist traps closer to Belém, this is the move.

Lisbon

Manteigaria - Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata - Chiado

Manteigaria sits on Largo de Camões in Chiado, and it does one thing: custard tarts straight from the oven. The 4.9 food rating comes from getting the fundamentals right — crisp pastry, creamy center, the right char on top — and serving them warm every time. Lines form, but they move because the operation is tight and the menu is short. The space is half bakery, half counter seating with a view of the production line. You watch the tarts come out, grab two or three with an espresso, and you're done. The value rating reflects what you'd expect: these cost about what a tart should cost in Lisbon, which is not much. It's cheap because it's efficient, not because it's cutting corners. If you want pastéis without the Belém trek or the tourist markup, this works. Expect to stand or perch. Expect it to be busy. The tarts justify both.

Lisbon

Cervejaria Ramiro

Cervejaria Ramiro is a seafood hall on Avenida Almirante Reis in Lisbon, and it's been packing tables for decades. The draw is simple: shellfish from the Atlantic, cooked fast, served on trays. You order prawns, crab, percebes, whatever's in season, they grill or boil it, and you crack it open yourself. The 4.6 food rating holds up — people tolerate the warehouse vibe and the wait because the product is that fresh. It's mid-range on price, which in this context means you can run up a bill quickly if you're not watching the weight. The prego steak sandwich at the end is a ritual — carb ballast after a kilo of shrimp. Lines form before opening, especially on weekends. If you arrive at 7 p.m. without a reservation, expect to stand outside for an hour. The service moves efficiently once you're seated, but the atmosphere score reflects the reality: it's loud, fluorescent-lit, and unapologetically functional.
