The Best Restaurants in Porto

This list ranks ten restaurants in and around Porto, but it won't help you plan two or three great dinners in the city center. Most of these spots sit in Ovar, Paços de Ferreira, Valença, Vila Real, Guimarães, and Braga—towns an hour or more from Porto proper. If you want the francesinha locals argue about, wine cellars in Gaia, or where to eat away from Ribeira tourists, you'll need a different list. This one is what the data gave us.

Updated September 2026

How this ranking works

  • Only published restaurants located in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia made the candidate list.
  • Candidates are ranked by review strength: average rating weighted by how many travelers have actually reviewed the restaurant.
  • The write-ups come from each restaurant's real attributes and traveler-sentiment data — restaurants can't pay to be here.

More on our method: how we pick what we recommend.

Pao De Lo De Ovar Cruz1© TripAdvisor contributor via TripAdvisor

Pao De Lo De Ovar Cruz

Porto · 5★ · 42 reviews

Pao De Lo De Ovar Cruz holds a perfect 5.0 rating across 42 reviews for doing one thing obsessively well: pão de ló, the eggy, barely-set sponge cake Ovar is famous for. The food score is maxed out, which for a single-product bakery means they've nailed the traditional recipe and kept it consistent.

Book it if: Dessert lovers making the drive between Porto and Aveiro who want the definitive version of a regional specialty.

Skip it if: Anyone looking for a full meal or staying within Porto city limits.

The tradeoff: It's in Ovar, halfway to Aveiro, so you're spending an hour round-trip for cake. It's also a bakery, not a restaurant—you're getting sponge, not dinner.

Liga Portugal Bistro

Porto · 4.5★ · 35 reviews

Liga Portugal Bistro sits inside the Portuguese Football League headquarters, which explains the 4.9 atmosphere score—diners like eating surrounded by memorabilia and match footage. The 4.5 overall rating holds across 35 reviews, with food edging slightly ahead of service and value.

Book it if: Football fans who want a meal that doubles as a museum visit.

Skip it if: Anyone indifferent to the sport or looking for a quiet, romantic dinner.

The tradeoff: The atmosphere is the main event here. You're paying mid-range prices for Portuguese food in a themed setting, not groundbreaking cooking.

DESIGUAL - Bar3© TripAdvisor contributor via TripAdvisor

Desigual Bar

Porto · 5★ · 23 reviews

Desigual Bar in Paços de Ferreira runs a perfect 5.0 across food, value, service, and atmosphere on 23 reviews. That's a small sample, but the consistency at price tier 1 suggests they're delivering cheap eats without the usual compromises.

Book it if: Budget travelers passing through an industrial town who need a reliable meal.

Skip it if: Anyone staying in Porto without a car or reason to visit Paços de Ferreira.

The tradeoff: It's in a small town halfway to the Douro Valley, so unless you're already there, you're making a special trip for international cuisine at a local bar.

Adega do Crasto4© TripAdvisor contributor via TripAdvisor

Adega do Crasto

Porto · 5★ · 20 reviews

Adega do Crasto in Tenões, just outside Braga, holds a 5.0 rating across 20 reviews with perfect food and value scores. That combination—grilled meats done right, portions that match the check—suggests straightforward cooking that brings people back without needing to shout about it.

Book it if: Diners in Braga who want honest Portuguese grilled meats without tourist markup.

Skip it if: Anyone based in Porto without plans to visit Braga.

The tradeoff: You're traveling to Tenões, a suburb outside Braga, which is already an hour north of Porto. It's a local spot, not a destination.

Café Portugal

Porto · 3.7★ · 44 reviews

Café Portugal in Valença holds a 3.7 rating across 44 reviews, the largest sample on this list. The highest mark is atmosphere at 4.2, which suggests old-tile charm and wooden booths, but the food and service scores are lower—serviceable, not exceptional.

Book it if: Travelers crossing the Spanish border at Valença who need a cheap coffee and a bite.

Skip it if: Anyone treating Porto dining as a priority or expecting memorable food.

The tradeoff: It's a border-town café with mediocre scores. You're stopping here out of convenience, not quality, and it's nowhere near Porto.

Sabor Tripeiro

Porto · 5★ · 15 reviews

Sabor Tripeiro in Vila Nova de Gaia runs a perfect 5.0 on food and service across 15 reviews. The name signals tripe and traditional Porto cooking, and the cheap price tier with those scores suggests they're doing offal and old-school dishes without compromise.

Book it if: Adventurous eaters in Gaia who want traditional Porto tripe dishes at rock-bottom prices.

Skip it if: Squeamish diners or anyone expecting a wine-focused dinner across from the port lodges.

The tradeoff: It's cheap-eats tripe in Gaia. The cuisine is polarizing, the sample size is small, and you're not getting the upscale Gaia wine-and-view experience most travelers expect.

PIZZAital

Porto · 5★ · 12 reviews

PIZZAital in Vila Real holds a 5.0 rating across twelve reviews, with a perfect food score. For a small Italian place in a regional city, that consistency suggests they've nailed the pizza and kept it steady.

Book it if: Travelers in Vila Real who want a break from Portuguese food and trust a small Italian spot.

Skip it if: Anyone staying in Porto or seeking authentic Portuguese cuisine.

The tradeoff: It's an Italian pizza place in Vila Real, an hour-plus from Porto. You're making a special trip for pizza, not exploring the local food scene.

Ultimatum Restaurante

Porto · 5★ · 10 reviews

Ultimatum Restaurante in Guimarães runs a perfect 5.0 across ten reviews, with food hitting the ceiling and service close behind at 4.7. The upscale vibe and Mediterranean-contemporary cuisine suggest a polished dinner in a historic city.

Book it if: Diners spending a day in Guimarães who want an upscale meal to match the setting.

Skip it if: Anyone based in Porto without plans to visit Guimarães.

The tradeoff: It's in Guimarães, an hour from Porto, and the ten-review sample is too small to guarantee consistency. You're betting on a small upscale spot in a tourist town.

Doçaria História à Mesa9© TripAdvisor contributor via TripAdvisor

Doçaria História a Mesa

Porto · 5★ · 9 reviews

Doçaria História a Mesa in Braga holds a 5.0 on food across nine reviews, rare for a place that splits focus between a sweet shop and a dining room. Both sides hold, and the service score matches, which suggests care across the board.

Book it if: Diners in Braga who want Portuguese food and pastries from the same kitchen.

Skip it if: Anyone prioritizing a full dinner experience over a bakery-restaurant hybrid.

The tradeoff: It's a bakery-restaurant in Braga with a tiny review sample. You're trusting nine diners' judgment, and you're an hour north of Porto.

Café-bar Maria qb10© TripAdvisor contributor via TripAdvisor

Cafe-bar Maria qb

Porto · 5★ · 7 reviews

Cafe-bar Maria qb sits on Praça da República in Porto with a perfect 5.0 across seven reviews. The sample is small, but it's the only spot on this list actually in Porto proper, and the cafe-bar format means coffee, drinks, and Portuguese small plates.

Book it if: Travelers in central Porto who want a quick, reliable cafe meal on a square most people pass through.

Skip it if: Anyone seeking a memorable dinner or willing to gamble on seven reviews.

The tradeoff: Seven reviews is barely a dataset. You're taking a chance on a casual cafe-bar with no track record, even if it's the only Porto entry here.
